The birth of El Barrilete

El Barrilete is one of the projects supported by the fund. Started as a day centre for local kids, it has grown dramatically over the ten years of its existence. It now also operates as a refuge for abandoned kids with fifteen children living there permanently.
It started almost by accident. A previous children’s project in the barrio closed and the children were returned to playing on the streets. Maria, who founded El Barrilete, set up an informal school on the pavement. Two expatriate local teachers came across her giving lessons and undertook to find a building to rent so she could take the children off the street. And so El Barrilete was born.
